MIT researchers have developed an ultrasound sticker that can help identify signs of disease. More specifically, this postage stamp-sized sticker can be worn on the skin and detect liver / kidney failure as well as the progression of solid tumors.
How does it work? Its built-in sensor transmits sound waves through the skin and then into the body, where they reflect off internal organs before coming back out through the sticker. This pattern of the reflected waves can be read as a signature of organ rigidity, which the sticker can accurately measure and track over a 48-hour period.

When some organs undergo disease, they can stiffen over time. With this wearable sticker, we can continuously monitor changes in rigidity over long periods of time, which is crucially important for early diagnosis of internal organ failure,” said Xuanhe Zhao, Senior Author of the Paper and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT.
