Hubble Galaxy I Zwicky 18
NASA / ESA’s Hubble Space Telescope captured a surreal image of dwarf irregular Galaxy I Zwicky 18, located 59 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. This image was captured using Hubble’s near-infrared and visible-light instruments, revealing faint, older stars that suggest the galaxy’s star formation could have started as far back as 10 billion years ago .

What you’re looking at above are a multitude of small galaxies scattered on a black background: mainly reddish oval-shaped and spiral galaxies. The image is dominated by a dwarf irregular galaxy, which hosts a bright region of white and blue stars at its core. This region appears as two distinct lobes that are surrounded by blue dusty filaments.

Hubble Galaxy I Zwicky 18

New observations from [James Webb] aimed to study the life-cycle of stars and dust in I Zwicky 18 and build on previous data taken with Hubble. Webb’s precise, infrared observations of individual dusty stars in the galaxy will help astronomers uncover more information about these cycles in the early universe,” said NASA.
