NASA astronaut Don Pettit has logged more than 370 days in space and over 13 spacewalk hours, so it’s no surprise that he has captured some incredible photos, like these two showing what city lights on Earth look like from the International Space Station (ISS).

These two photos show the lights above Lake Michigan (bottom) and the other one of northern Mexico (top). If you look closer at the latter, you’ll realize that not only are city lights streaking across the Earth visible, but also a green atmospheric glow crowning the horizon. Auroras occur when energetic particles are ejected from the Sun and then interact with Earth’s upper atmosphere.
