Here’s an up-close look at the Boom Supersonic XB-1, a prototype aircraft that many are touting to be the Concorde’s successor. This demonstrator does not have a movable nose, but rather two nose-mounted cameras that are digitally augmented with attitude as well as flight path indications.
This high-tech system enables improved aerodynamic efficiency without the weight and complexity of a movable nose. Engineers used computational fluid dynamics simulations to explore thousands of designs for XB-1, resulting in an optimized design that combines safe, stable operation at takeoff and landing with efficiency at supersonic speeds. The demonstrator is almost made entirely from carbon fiber composite materials, enabling it to realize a sophisticated aerodynamic design in a strong, lightweight structure. Boom Supersonic’s production Overture aircraft will carry 64-80 passengers at Mach 1.7, about twice the speed of today’s subsonic airliners, while running on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
