Rockstar Games isn’t pulling a late April Fools’ prank—they officially announced today that Grand Theft Auto VI is now set for May 26, 2026, pushed back from its earlier fall 2025 release plan. In a statement on their website and X, Rockstar said they need “extra time to deliver the quality you expect and deserve,” aiming to go beyond what fans hope for.
Some experts say the delay wasn’t a big surprise. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier shared on Bluesky that Rockstar insiders never thought fall 2025 was doable because of the huge workload and a push to avoid overworking staff, making a 2026 release “unavoidable for months.” Other reports note Rockstar’s focus on perfecting the game to meet high expectations, especially since GTA 6 is expected to make billions and have a big cultural impact.

Fans have mixed feelings: some like the focus on quality, but others are upset, with social media posts ranging from funny comments like “We got a GTA 6 delay before GTA 6” to requests for screenshots to ease the disappointment. No new trailers or gameplay details came with the news, which has frustrated some fans.

The delay also changes the gaming world, giving other companies space to plan 2025 releases without clashing with GTA 6’s massive presence. Rumors about a Florida-style map, smarter AI, and characters named Lucia and Jason are still floating around, but Rockstar hasn’t confirmed them.
