
In 2013, a pixelated bird named Flappy flapped its way into the collective frustration of smartphone users everywhere. Dong Nguyen’s Flappy Bird was an extremely simple mobile game that could be played with one hand. By 2014, it was the most downloaded free game on iOS and Android, raking in $50,000 a day for Nguyen before he pulled it from app stores, overwhelmed by its addictive grip on players. Fast forward to 2025, and a creator known as Engineezy has resurrected this digital relic into a a real-life, physical Flappy Bird machine you can actually play.
Engineezy’s creation, showcased in a recent Hackster.io feature, is a feat of engineering that captures the chaotic essence of the original game while adding a layer of real-world charm. The setup is deceptively straightforward: a physical bird, suspended on a servo-driven mechanism, flaps up and down as players guide it through a series of endlessly rotating pipes. But beneath this simplicity lies a complex dance of motors, sensors, and ingenuity. “It’s not just about recreating the game,” Engineezy explained in the Hackster.io piece. “It’s about making it feel alive, with that same infuriating, addictive quality you got from the app.”

The bird itself is the heart of the system, mounted on a servo mechanism designed to mimic the game’s signature “floppiness.” Engineezy intentionally made the motion unwieldy, using a spring and an extended arm to give the bird a jerky, unpredictable bounce that mirrors the digital version’s maddening physics. Players control it with a button that triggers upward flaps, just like tapping a screen.

Then there’s the pipe system, a revolving mechanism that keeps the game’s endless obstacle course in motion. Two dowels create a continuous loop, with pipes mounted at varying heights to replicate the randomized gaps of the original. A separate servo adjusts the pipe heights dynamically, ensuring no two runs feel quite the same. This alone would be impressive, but Engineezy didn’t stop there.

A collision-detection system tracks when the bird clips a pipe, instantly halting the game with a satisfying (or infuriating) thud. A scoring mechanism tallies your progress, taunting you to try again when you inevitably fail. “The goal was to make it feel like you’re fighting the same battle as in the app, but with real stakes,” Engineezy said.

Engineezy’s design process was a months-long odyssey of trial and error, far outstripping the “handful of days” it took Nguyen to code the original app. The result is a machine that feels alive, almost as if the bird itself is struggling against the player’s commands, just like in the game that drove millions to the edge of sanity.
