Hayward, California, might not top your list for the next big leap in transportation, but Zooxโs brand-new 220,000-square-foot facility is proving otherwise. Unveiled on June 18, 2025, this vast plantโspanning the length of three and a half football fieldsโis the first in the U.S. crafted specifically to mass-produce robotaxis.
With the power to roll out 10,000 autonomous vehicles a year at peak capacity, this hub is a key piece of Zooxโs strategy to kick off commercial ride-hailing in Las Vegas, San Francisco, and more. Beyond just building, the facility tackles engineering, software and hardware blending, parts storage, shipping, and final testing.

Every robotaxi gliding off the line is a sleek, symmetrical, battery-electric wonderโbuilt from scratch for passengers, not pilots. โThe number of Zoox robotaxis we produce will grow and scale to match the demand of our commercial service as needed,โ the company shared in a recent blog update.

Machines handle jobs like laying adhesive for glass with no leaks or smears, while human workers steer most of the assembly. Zooxโs dedication to U.S. manufacturing shines through, with the plant set to spawn hundreds of jobs in the Bay Area for operators, logistics folks, and assembly pros. โBuilding a cutting-edge facility also let us spotlight our values at Zoox,โ the company added.

This isnโt your typical car factoryโno energy-guzzling welding, cutting, or painting happens on-site. Instead, Zoox teams with suppliers to pre-build big chunks, speeding up production and cutting power use. Logistics gear is picked to slash noise and air pollution. That efficiency carries over to the robotaxis, assembled modularly thanks to their quadrant design, moving through stations where sensors, interiors, and systems click together with care.

Testing is where the Hayward plant shows its strength. Before a robotaxi hits the streets, it faces a tough lineup of final checks. A calibration zone fine-tunes sensors, while wheel and headlight adjustments ensure spot-on accuracy. They even get doused in a fake rainstorm to prove theyโre leak-proof, safeguarding riders and tech. The last hurdle? A self-driven lap on an outdoor track.

These boxy robotaxis, sans steering wheels or pedals, are tailored for rider comfort, featuring four inward-facing seats for a cozy, shared ride. โOwning and controlling the full process, from vehicle design to assembly to operations, makes it easier for Zoox to quickly implement changes based on rider feedback or technological developments,โ the company explained.
