Hyundai Elexio Electric SUV
Hyundai has just introduced Elexio, a brand new electric SUV in China that is less expensive than a fully loaded Honda Civic and comes standard with Dolby Atmos sound. Six speakers come as standard, but if you choose Bose, you get two more. When you open the door, you’ll notice a 27-inch 4K screen sprawled across the dashboard, like a TV that has forgotten where it belongs. Kugou music and iQIYI are already installed and ready to play movies and music in the sound bubble while driving.

As you climb into the driver’s seat, you’ll notice a second, smaller screen down low on the windshield that displays speed and navigation information in great contrast. All of this is powered by a high-performance Qualcomm CPU, which allows menus to open faster than on conventional laptops. Wireless charging pads keep two phones charged at all times, and 46 cubby holes contain everything a family needs to pack.

When you open the tailgate, you’ll find 506 liters of storage space, which is enough to hold four roller luggage standing upright. When the rear seats are folded back, there is a flat floor all the way to the front headrests, allowing for 1540 liters without a single hump in the middle. The seats’ side bolsters will keep you in place on twisting roads before loosening up when the route straightens out.

Steel now makes up three-quarters of the body, nine airbags protect the gaps, and if the car detects a problem, it will even pop the door handles out for you. There are cameras following your eyes, and if you start to go off course, the seat will nudge you and the screen will flash a coffee icon to encourage you to take a rest. An 88.1kwh battery rests on the floor, promising 722km of range on a single charge during China’s mild test cycle. If you can connect the car to a fast charger, it will charge from 30 to 80% in 27 minutes, door to door.

Next year, it will be available in Australia in three configurations: 215 horsepower front wheel drive, the same powertrain but with a longer range tuning, and 308 horsepower all wheel drive. In the more demanding global test, the range is decreased to “approximately 500km” – enough to travel from Sydney to Melbourne with one coffee stop. Local prices will range between $55,000 and $65,000 AUD, which is roughly equivalent to a Tesla Model Y, and I’m sure some dealership managers will be sweating.

The Elexio left Beijing Hyundai’s production line on the same skateboard chassis as the Ioniq 5, before being given a one-of-a-kind makeover by a team of Chinese engineers. Those crystal-square headlights are pretty lighting bright at night, the design has a cleanliness to it that allows you to walk away with a hose and still have it look like new (which is really impressive), and the solid build of every joint and weld just screams quality – whether you’re cruising down the highway or taking the kids on a weekend trip to the cottage.

Hyundai has a lot riding on this one – they’re calling the Elexio the opening act, for goodness sake – and if it succeeds, the next wave of new vehicles will follow – sedans and higher-clearance SUVs all sharing the same global platform, but with that extra something special from Chinese engineers. And it all begins with the Elexio, at least for now. For the time being, this new car is only available in China and costs 119,800 yuan, which is around $16,900 here in the States.
