When you first open the box, you’ll notice how light it is. Amazon managed to trim more than 30 grams off the old model. That means the new Fire HD 10, priced at $69.99 (down from $139.99), will slide comfortably into a backpack pocket without dragging the zipper down on you. Hold it in one hand for an hour and your wrist won’t be bothered.
Switch it on, and the tablet just jumps to life – a 10.1-inch screen lighting up at a crisp 1920 x 1200. It’s just bright enough to read in the blistering sun, yet gentle enough to be squinting at under the covers when you’re reading a bedtime story to the kids. Colors really pop when streaming the latest shows like Apple TV+’s Pluribus, while text stays sharp as a tack when reading ebooks.

Under the hood, an eight core CPU is hummin along at 2.05 GHz, and that small bump over the old model gives you a nice twenty five percent speed boost in app launches and stutter-free scrolling through long recipe pages. Three gigabytes of RAM means you can have Netflix, Spotify and a dozen browser tabs all open at the same time without issue.
There are 5MP cameras on both sides – a nice little touch rarely found in budget tablets – and both of them can now record 1080p video like a champ. A clean step up from the blurry 720p clips of a couple years ago – so zoom calls look pretty good, and the front lens is even in landscape orientation – great when you’ve got the tablet slotted into that optional keyboard case.

Battery life stretches to 13 hours of mixed use – watching videos, browsing the net, and the odd light gaming session. Throw in the included USB-C cable and you can get a full charge in no time – under four hours, to be precise. Leave the charger at home on weekend trips and the Fire will rarely ask for a top up before bedtime.
Operating system wise, it runs Fire OS 8 – a friendly fork of Android 11. Swipe right and you get a clean home screen of your most recent books and shows. Alexa is just a tap away from helping you set timers as you chop them onions or read the weather while the coffee brews. Parental controls can lock the tablet down tighter than Fort Knox if you need them to, but then they’re just as easy to undo with a password. And yes, installing the Google Play Store is a breeze.
