Ryan Gosling’s latest space adventure, Project Hail Mary, combines hardcore science, raw emotion, and a pinch of cosmic humor. Helmed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the masterminds behind The LEGO Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, this take on Andy Weir’s 2021 hit novel rockets into theaters and IMAX on March 20, 2026.
Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up solo on a spacecraft, 11.9 million light-years from home, with zero clue how he got there. As his memory creeps back, he realizes he’s Earth’s last shot against a doomsday scenario: the sun’s fading, and life’s on the line. Penned by Drew Goddard of The Martian fame, the film nails Weir’s mix of brainy science and down-to-earth storytelling. Grace is no caped crusader—he’s a nervous astronaut, cracking lines like, “I’m the ‘not’ in ‘astronaut!’” while tackling a mission that feels like a universe-sized test he didn’t prep for.

Lord and Miller sprinkle their signature humor, while early clips shown at CinemaCon 2025 had audiences intrigued, with Gosling joking that the movie’s scope was so huge, “we tried a TV screen, but it just laughed at us.” The trailer teases an interesting alien sidekick named Rocky, whose friendship with Grace brings a warm, unexpected glow to the galactic mess.

The cast is a heavy-hitting crew, with Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) stealing scenes as the force pushing Grace into the mission. Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us), Lionel Boyce (The Bear), and Ken Leung (Lost) add layers to what could’ve been a solo act, with Hüller’s mix of grit and heart poised to shine.

The production crew is a sci-fi powerhouse. Lord and Miller, joined by producers Gosling, Weir, Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, and Rachel O’Connor, deliver a film that’s both precise and daring. Goddard’s script, sharpened by his Martian experience, keeps the nearly three-hour epic tight and gripping.
