A falling asteroid, designated as Sar2667, put on a fiery light show over the English Channel and as far south as Paris, France at approximately 3am local time. Explosions, or meteor air bursts, of this size happen a few times each year, but rarely are they discovered in advance like this one was.
Meteoroids typically enter the Earth’s atmosphere from outer space traveling at speeds of at least 7 mi/s and their immense speed rapidly compresses the air in its path, resulting in ram pressure. As the air in front of the meteoroid is compressed its temperature quickly rises, due to any molecules and atoms being forced to occupy a smaller space. Ram pressure and the extreme temperatures sometimes cause larger or more solid meteorites to explode.
