While Atlas is working construction, Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot dog is busy inspecting the underground Paris Metro (Metro de Paris) tunnels for the RATP Group (Autonomous Parisian Transportation Administration).
France’s RATP Group transports 16 million people daily so its vital that they aim to provide a better customer experience. Why use a robot dog? Well, the Paris Metro has 308 stations and 136.7 miles (220 kilometers) of railway, including tons of underground galleries, tunnels, sub-docks, etc., all of which are filled with thousands of inexpection points. Using Spot, the team was able to gather data without being exposed to risk. Spot was equipped with 360° PTZ camera with infrared sensor to allow it to capture accurate thermal and visual data in dimly-lit, harsh environments
- UL 2272 certified for safety. Smart Battery Management System for reliability. IP54 waterproof protection.
- Sturdy & Powerful: Compact design, 28 lbs, 220 lbs max load. Dual 400W motors, 10 mph max speed, 13.7 miles per charge, 15° slope.
- Road Adaptive Design: 10.5" pneumatic tires for smooth ride. Knee control bar for precise steering, easy lifting. Age: 16-50. Height: 3.11-6.6".

At RATP Infrastructures, we have more than 35,000 civil works components to check and maintain in the Greater Paris area transport network, and each of them must be inspected every five years. But some of them are very hard to reach and can be even dangerous to inspect for the maintenance team. It became obvious to use Spot to help operators complete their mission,” said William Niepceron, Business Manager, RATP Infrastructures.
