There’s ETH Zurich’s Myoshirt, and then the University of Maryland’s Calico, a unique wearable robot assistant that slides around your clothing on a mini railway of sorts. It can be used as a stethoscope to listen to your vitals or just to whisper some tips for daily inspiration.
The track is made of neodymium magnets that have been embedded into the clothing at even intervals, enabling them to double as markers. Calico’s built-in sensors can detect these magnets, and use them to estimate where it’s currently located, thus enabling it to effectively plan a path across your body. It can transport up to a 20-gram payload at speeds between 115 mm/s and 227 mm/s. A full charge of its 100 milliampere-hour battery is good for over 8-hours idling or 30-minutes of continuous movement.

The lab experiments showed that Calico could help novices learn dance moves with its continuous feedback through haptic and visual means. The result of the scenario-based surveys suggested that general users could recognize the potential of using Calico to address various life challenges despite concerns,” said the researchers.
