China Scientist New Mineral Moon Chang'e-5 Mission Changesite-(Y)

Chinese scientists might be busy building an artificial moon right here on Earth, but earlier this week they announced the discovery of a new mineral found in lunar samples retrieved from the Chang’e-5 mission. Officially named Changesite-(Y), this mineral looks like a colorless transparent columnar crystal and found in lunar basalt particles by a research team from the Beijing Research Institute of Uranium Geology.



The site where Chang’e-5 mission retrieved Changesite-(Y) is claimed to be 1-billion years younger than where the US and former Soviet Union collected their samples. What does the name mean? It’s a combination of Change and site, paying tribute to the great achievement of China’s lunar exploration project as it is often called the Change Project.

Analyzing the composition of lunar soil and lunar rock samples and studying nuclear science to assess potential nuclear energy resources on the Moon is one of the strategic goals of China’s Lunar Exploration Project. The applications of nuclear technology has played an essential role to reach that end,” said the China National Nuclear Corporation.
