There’s mosquito-zapping laser weapons, and then the UK’s DragonFire, a powerful 50-kW class laser that until now has been classified. This solid-state laser is made from bundles of doped glass fibers with their output turned into a single beam.
A British-designed beam-combining system turns it into a single beam and mounted on a turret, which boasts has a secondary laser as well as an electro-optical camera for target acquisition and beam correction. Most impressive of all, it costs just £10 (US$13) per shot, far less than a comparable missile. For now, the Royal Navy and the British Army will only use DragonFire as a technology demonstrator rather than in the battlfield.
