Disney’s HoloTile floor demo at D23 shows the future of augmented reality gaming, and it’s basically a high-tech omni-directional treadmill. Put simply, it simulates the feeling of movement without actually having to move, and it can also detect real-world objects for an even more immersive experience.
Instead of a belt, HoloTile utilizes small spheres that rotate to match your foot movement. You won’t need a tether either like some current systems, and more than one person can use the expandable HoloTile VR treadmill simultaneously. It can also move objects similar to a conveyor belt, but in any direction. There’s no word yet on if we’ll ever see a commercial version.
