The US Marine Corps’ F-35B just made history by firing its gun pod while flying for the first time. This weapon straps onto the belly of the aircraft, and enables the fighter the option to sacrifice a little stealth, drag, and range for 220-rounds of 25 mm firepower – a big upgrade from the 20 mm guns that current US fighter jets carry.
One caveat: though F-35 can fire its gun while flying, the software update needed to properly aim the gun remains elusive, but should be coming later this year. Now there are rumors that another Top Gun movie is in the works, and the F-35B seems like the perfect aircraft to succeed the aging F-14A Tomcat.
