Fermilab’s DUNE experiment will take place in these massive underground caverns, which were just recently excavated, in South Dakota. Scientists will use the particle accelerator to study the behavior of neutrinos in hopes of solving some of the biggest questions about our universe.
Some of the questions include why our universe composed of matter and how does an exploding star create a black hole? These caverns are set to house four large neutrino detectors, each one measuring about the size of a seven-story building, all of which will be filled with liquid argon and record the rare interaction of neutrinos with the transparent liquid.
