This film was actually inspired by the 1863 photos of ‘Whipped Peter’ that were taken during a Union Army medical examination. These photos first appeared in Harper’s Weekly and one in particular, known as ‘The Scourged Back,’ shows Peter’s bare back scarred by a whipping, which ultimately contributed to growing public opposition to slavery.
