Huawei Engineer China Self-Driving Driverless Bicycle
Huawei AI engineer Zhihui Jun has always been intrigued by autonomy, whether it be smart cars or military vehicles. So, he decided to put his passion to work by developing a self-driving bicycle. This electric bicycle, powered by a lithium-ion battery good for 2-3 hours on a single charge, comes equipped with various sensors like LiDAR, accelerometers, and gyroscopes, to help it navigate obstacles as well as stand on its own.

Navigating obstacles sounds hard enough for a self-driving bicycle, but standing on its own really took some clever engineering. More specifically, a custom disk-style control module connected to precision sensors that allow it sense when the 3D-printed frame starts to tilt. If it does start tilting, the bicycle automatically starts making tiny movements to balance itself and remain upright. Everything is controlled with a Huawei Ascend 310, a programmable AI processor capable of delivering 22 teraflops @ INT8 and 11 teraflops @ FP16 with just 8 W of power consumption.
