Huawei Maextro S800 Launch
Huawei, the tech giant known for smartphones and telecom hardware, has swerved hard into the ultra-luxury car game with the Maextro S800, a massive electric sedan gunning for the likes of Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Maybach. Born from a joint-venture with Chinese automaker JAC, this EV beast has already caused a buying frenzy in China, snagging 3,600 pre-orders in its first week, including a wild 1,600 vehicles in just 24 hours.

Crafted to rival the Rolls-Royce Spectre and Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the Maextro S800 stretches 215.7 inches long, slightly outpacing the Maybach S-Class, though its wheelbase is a touch shorter at 132.7 inches. Its exterior borrows heavily from the European luxury playbook: a stately long hood, a gracefully curved roofline, and Rolls-Royce-inspired disc wheels paired with a Maybach-esque bi-tone finish.

Some might call it derivative, but Huawei’s CEO Yu Chengdong boldly claims the S800 surpasses its rivals in luxury and comfort. “This may be a million-level car, very high-end,” he declared last year. “Our benchmark far exceeds the level of Maybach and Rolls-Royce Phantom.” That’s a lofty promise, but the S800’s early sales suggest Chinese buyers are buying into the vision.

Step inside the S800, and it’s like entering a rolling penthouse, complete with a “starry sky” roof that channels Rolls-Royce’s iconic celestial headliner and plush upholstery designed with chauffeured VIPs in mind. Huawei’s tech chops are on full display with a “floating” dashboard that echoes Mercedes’ MBUX Hyperscreen, packing a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a massive 17.7-inch infotainment screen, and a 12.3-inch display for the front passenger. Toss in Level 3 self-driving smarts and Huawei’s Tuling Intelligent Chassis, and you’ve got a high-tech palace on wheels. “We’re not just building a car; we’re redefining luxury with intelligence,” a Huawei spokesperson declared.

Don’t sleep on the performance, either—this isn’t just a cushy cruiser. The all-electric Maextro S800 boasts a tri-motor system churning out 852 horsepower and a hefty 850 lb-ft of torque, sprinting from 0 to 62 mph in 4.3 to 4.5 seconds. Its 94.4 kWh battery packs a CLTC range of 416 to 436 miles, while the range-extended model with a 63.3 kWh battery delivers 160 to 193 miles of electric-only range. With a starting price of 708,000 yuan (about $98,600), it undercuts the Mercedes-Maybach S480’s $203,100 tag in China, making it a legit player. “Our goal is to deliver unparalleled value,” said Yu Chengdong, hammering home the S800’s push to make luxury more accessible.
