Inflatable Bicycle Helmet Airbag
Sweden-based company Hövding has unveiled its third-generation inflatable bicycle helmet, complete with built-in Bluetooth capability. Called the Hövding 3, this airbag-like device syncs with smartphones so it can send messages to friends and / or family in case of an accident. Simply put, it’s worn around the neck like a collar, and upon impact, it automatically inflates, just like a car airbag, instantly protecting the head. This new version is much easier to use, more comfortable and can be adjusted for maximum comfort. It also comes equipped with patented airbag technology and upgraded battery life, which means a full charge is good for 15 active hours of cycling. There’s also an app for iOS and Android platforms that displays how far you have cycled and the remaining battery time. When it’s activated, it Hövding 3 registers movements 200 times a second, and the airbag is inflated in 0.1 seconds in an accident. One caveat: it’ll set you back $310 USD.

“Our surveys of cyclists in seven major European cities show that 70 per cent would cycle more if they felt safer. We have focused on this and want to contribute to greater safety,” said the company.
