On Vietnam’s 80th National Day earlier this month, Vinfast handed over a fleet of these beasts to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including 2 armored units and 10 standard ones to transport international guests around Hanoi. The Lac Hong 900 LX is named after an ancient Vietnamese mythology about dragon and fairy offspring.
The armored version is a collaboration with Canada’s INKAS Armored Vehicle Manufacturing to cover the body in reinforced steel and composites that don’t scream “target”. Bullet-resistant glass thickens the windows without making them conspicuous shields, and the whole system passes on Vietnamese roads without incident. Weighing 5,049 kg – nearly double the standard model’s 3,035 kg – the extra weight comes from panels that can withstand NATO-grade rifle bullets, including armor-piercers. Add in run-flat tires that can roll for 80-100 km after a collision and you have a ride that reduces potential calamities to minor detours.

At the Beschussamt Ulm plant in Germany, engineers tested it to the limit, firing 440 live rounds from assault weapons and detonating 11 grenades from above and below the chassis. According to one account, 400 laser-guided bullets were fired on a different endurance test, but the numbers only matter because the vehicle was certified to VPAM VR7 – the gold level for heads-of-state transit that requires survivability against multiple attacks. Grenades? It can handle 2 DM51s going off at the same time without folding. Fire suppression systems activate automatically as temperatures rise, and optional extras like onboard oxygen or satellite phones are available for missions where every second counts. Sirens and warning lights are stored away until needed, keeping the profile low-key.

Power comes from a 123 kWh battery pack from China’s CATL, so it’s suitable for daily use in a country where VinFast controls the roads. The standard model has 2 electric motors for all-wheel drive, 402 horsepower and 620 Nm of torque. That configuration can do 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and has a claimed range of 595 km on a full charge.

To offset the weight penalty, the motors are 455 horsepower when the armored trim is selected. Torque is the same 620 Nm, but 0-100km/h takes 9.8 seconds. Range drops to around 450km, which is plenty for a full day of official marches or quick getaways. Nobody’s going to drag race this thing, but the extra power makes it feel less like dragging a tank through molasses. The dual-motor system makes the handling stable, even if the turning radius says otherwise.
Get inside and the cabin is a world of calm luxury. Golden Nanmu wood paneling warms the dash and doors, Nappa leather seats surround the passengers in softness. The seams are stitched with gold thread, each piece is hand-placed to eliminate rough edges. The VIP zone is for rear passengers, who sit on extra-wide benches with footrests that recline just so. A soundproof glass wall separates them from the driver. Electric curtains slide shut for privacy, and an intercom allows commands to be given without raising your voice. Soft lighting and acoustic damping makes the road noise a distant hum, so long trips feel like a private salon.
