UAE-based Highland Systems introduces Kronos, a futuristic armored submarine that can accommodate up to 10-passengers and is suitable for commercial, rescue and military operations. Think of it as an F-117A Nighthawk, but for the open seas, thanks in part to its innovative hull design, which vastly reduces fuel consumption, while increasing maximum speed and provide more stability.
Power comes from a hybrid system consisting of a diesel generator and an electric motor-driven waterjet propulsion system generation 1,200hp and 1,770 lb-ft of torque. The company claims that it has a 328-foot working depth and a maximum critical depth of 820-feet. Its air supply is good for up to 36-hours, although with backup oxygen, it can handle a 54-hour mission when the diesel generator kicks in. As for performance, it can reportedly hit 50mph on the surface and 31mph underwater. For something a bit more bizarre-looking, look no further than the Soviet Union’s VVA-14 amphibious submarine hunter aircraft.
