International Space Station Jupiter Saturn Conjunction

For those who haven’t seen The Great Conjunction, or when Jupiter and Saturn appear closest together in the sky, there’s still time. However, catching the International Space Station passing between these two planets is another rarity altogether. Photographer Jason De Freitas managed to do just that, since he figured out the path of the International Space Station after quite a bit of planning. He drove an hour to find the perfect spot to where everything would be aligned for this shot.

At approximately 9:54pm, this phenomenon occurred at Jellore Lookout in New South Wales, Australia. The photographer made sure he had his Pentax 67 camera and Takumar 600mm f/4 lens pointed directly at the planets and captured a 10-second long exposure on Fujifilm Provia 100f film. A Skywatcher NEQ6 equatorial mount was used to track everything.

Probably the most unique shot I’ve ever taken. [S]omehow everything on the night worked out. Beyond thrilled with this one. The timing of this was down to the second and I still can’t believe I pulled it off,” said Freitas.
