Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon, has had his patent for a phone airbag system granted. Here’s how it would operate: Prior to the impact between a surface and a device, the risk of device damage is assessed. If the risk of harm to the device surpasses a certain level, a protection system is engaged to reduce or eliminate damage.
According to the patent filing documents, this system uses the handset’s integrated gyroscope, camera, accelerometers, and other onboard sensors to determine whether it is currently falling. If a fall is detected, the system will deploy airbags to limit possible harm and may alter the trajectory of the fall by firing air jets.
