SPIDAR, the flying spider robot, is a thing of nightmares, while inventor James Bruton’s robot centipede looks like something from The Jetsons. It consists of five flexible drive train segments, each with two pairs of legs, that operate together mechanically for locomotion. The segments boast a drive shaft that moves its legs through carefully placed gears and linkages, all connected by universal joints.
Despite all its legs, the robot is powered by one DC motor, which is controlled by an Arduino Mega 2560 board. It utilizes two servo motors for steering connected to elastic cords that pivot the segments. However, this setup caused the robot’s feet to slide backward, which meant that Bruton needs to modify the leg mechanisms before scaling up the robot to a full-sized version that he can ride.
