Tampere University researchers at the Light Robots group have developed a real-life transforming fairy robot that uses the power of wind and light to fly. Hao Zeng and Jianfeng Yang’s tiny robot can be powered as well as controlled by a light source, such as a laser beam or LED. Light can also be used to help the dandelion-like structure change shape, thus enabling it to adapt to wind direction.

Its made from responsive polymer, and in gloomy calm weather, the fairy stays still. When light starts shining, it opens up automatically, exposing the robot to the wind flow. Future iterations will be able to carry micro-electronic devices like GPS, sensors and biochemical compounds. The ultimate goal is for artificial pollination applications in which the robot could be dispersed freely by natural winds and then steered by light toward specific areas with trees.

Superior to its natural counterparts, this artificial seed is equipped with a soft actuator. The actuator is made of light-responsive liquid crystalline elastomer, which induces opening or closing actions of the bristles upon visible light excitation,” said Hao Zeng, Academy Research Fellow and the group leader.
