James Webb Space Telescope 3D Visualization Maise's Galaxy
James Webb Space Telescope data was used to generate this mind-boggling 3D visualization of around 5,000 galaxies as part of the CEERS (Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science) Survey, including one never before seen galaxy. The furthest one, called Maisie’s Galaxy, formed approximately 390 million years after the big bang and a prime example of an early galaxy that only Webb could see.

Why can only Webb see Maisie’s Galaxy? Its instruments can capture the light from these early galaxies, which has been shifted to infrared wavelengths by the expansion of the universe. This visualization shows astronomers just how much Webb builds off the accomplishments of Hubble, enabling them to determine which galaxies are truly far away from those nearby. It will help them learn about the formation of stars in these early galaxies.

James Webb Space Telescope 3D Visualization Maise's Galaxy

This observatory just opens up this entire period of time for us to study. We couldn’t study galaxies like Maisie’s before because we couldn’t see them. Now, not only are we able to find them in our images, we’re able to find out what they’re made of and if they differ from the galaxies that we see close by,” said Rebecca Larson, CEERS Investigator from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
