Jeff Bezos appeared on a BBC special on internet shopping back in 1997 and made several interesting comments. He stated that within the first 30-days of Amazon going live in 1995, they managed to ship books to 45 different countries around the world.
Amazon’s catalog in 1997 consisted of 2.5 million different titles, or more than 10-times as many titles as the largest physical book superstore. He predicted that internet bookselling would eventually become a very large business, and that most certainly came true. What he didn’t mention in this interview is that the first book sold on Amazon was Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought by Douglas R. Hofstadter.
