While a bizarre tentacle robot is fun to look at, this lock picking robot may actually come in handy one day. Built by Sparks and Code, this CNC machine robot consists of multiple stepper motors powered by an Arduino Uno system on a chip microcontroller, paired with three DRV885 stepper motor drivers as well as microswitches to let it know when it reaches zero position.
Most know that a Master Lock 3 padlock isn’t the hardest to pick, but for a robot, it does rely heavily on tensioning. In other words, it utilizes one stepper motor to turn the tensinoing arm with a string attached to its drive wheel and the end of the lever. A load cell is then used to measure the applied force to the lock, while picking the lock required centering posts at the end of each linear rod. A firmware coded in MicroPython can then successfully pick the Master Lock 3 and in future versions, the robot should be able to tackle padlocks with anti-picking mechanisms.
