Doctor Volt found an old Logitech computer mouse that relies on an optical sensor to detect movement, but can it be used as a camera? Most certainly, as it already contains an STM32 processor with an SPI interface, which means only a custom PCB (ESP32-S3) was needed to gather image data.
An M12 lens with a 3D printed mount is used to provide focus, while the existing microcontroller and camera part containing an SPI interface can accurately query the sensor information. Sure, the pictures may be monochrome and Game Boy Camera-like, but it’s safe to say that this mod was most certainly a success.
