Lumasky, a company from Dubai, is famous for its huge drone light shows, having used up to 7,000 drones in past events. For the Disneyland Abu Dhabi show, they used a record-breaking 9,000 drones, the most ever in the Persian Gulf region.
These drones aren’t your typical store-bought models but are custom-built for light shows. They’re quick, lightweight, and equipped with vibrant LED lights that can show a huge range of colors (potentially over 4 billion combinations, like other high-tech drone fleets), painting bright, dynamic pictures in the night sky. These drones are so precisely engineered that they can hover within centimeters of each other, acting like glowing pixels to form intricate sky art.

In the Abu Dhabi show, 9,000 drones were used, way more than usual shows (200–300 for private events, 500 for city events, or 1,000+ for national celebrations). Each drone is equipped with GPS and RTK for sub-meter accuracy, allowing it to maintain its position within the formation.

Though not confirmed for every drone, Lumasky has used “pyro drones” in other shows, mixing fireworks with LED lights for extra wow-factor. The Disneyland show had fireworks, so some drones might have carried pyrotechnic effects or worked alongside ground-based fireworks.

How do they make the patterns? Lumasky’s team, including 3D artists and choreographers, teamed up with Disney to plan the show’s story. Disney fans will appreciate that the designers use 3D animation software to craft digital versions of the seemingly magical patterns first.

That means each drone gets its own exact place in a 3D grid, acting like a glowing “pixel” in the sky. Can you imagine? It took thousands of drones to bring the breathtaking Cinderella Castle to life, with every turret and detail perfectly shaped, all carefully planned to make the sky sparkle with Disney magic.
