The annual Micromouse competition with robotic mice trying to solve mazes may be one of the coolest you probably never heard of. Put simply, the maze consists of a 16×16 grid of cells, each 180 mm (7.1 in) square with walls 50 mm (1.97 in) high. All of the robots are completely autonomous and must find their way from a predetermined starting position to the central area of the maze without any help.
Despite their small size, the robotic mice still needs to have hardware that keeps track of where it is, discover walls, map out the maze and detect when it has reached the goal. After reaching the goal, the mouse continues to perform additional searches of the maze until it has found the most efficient route from the start to finish. Once determined, the mouse follows that route in the shortest possible time.
