Microsoft is set to deliver upgraded HoloLens AR googles to the US Army by July 31st. Called the IVAS (Integrated Visual Augmentation System), this new variant is slimmer, lighter and more balanced, making it more comfortable while improving perfmance.
Other improvements include separating the computing unit from the controller, which means the computing hardware is now located at the back of the helmet, while the controller can be worn anywhere on the upper body. Previously, the controller and computer were attached together on the chest. What can these goggles do? They can now display color-coded navigation points and other map markers, enabling soldiers to select specific elements, place them on a virtual map, and use them to generate a route that can be shared with comrades. Soldiers will also be able to work together and create a virtual 3D tactical table of a terrain or building complex to plan their mission.
