Rheinmetall partnered with Slovakia-based company CSM Industry to develop a new high-mobility multipurpose excavator vehicle based on the HX 8×8. Think of it as the Swiss Army Knife of military vehicles, as it carries an UDS 214 excavator build-on that is specially designed for combat engineer operations as well as disaster relief missions. It’s capable of pivoting 360° and features an extendable telescopic arm can stretch up to 48-feet.
In addition to the excavator shovel, it also boasts a hook and hydraulic drum cutter. When required, it can lift loads of up to 7.5 tons, thus double as an auxiliary crane. If necessary, the excavator operator’s cab can be fitted with a ventilation system. Power comes from a MAN D2676 diesel engine producing 540 hp, enabling it to hit a top speed of 56 mph. It’s capable of handling inclines of 60% and wade through water up to 4.9-feet deep.

The system finds its application wherever there is a need for immediate action to save lives and property, e.g. during natural disasters. It also plays an important role in military deployment, in securing technical means and structures as well as supporting the operation of combat units,” said Rheinmetall.
