Chinese University of Hong Kong researchers, led by Ben Chen, have developed the Mirs-X drone, which can fly, dive and swim underwater using four propellers. This 3.6-pound (1.63 kg) device can hover for up to 6-minutes in the air or dive underwater at depths of up to 3-meters for approximately 40-minutes.
Surprisingly, the Mirs-X drone is completely autonomous, making it perfect for rescue missions, surveillance, and remote sensing. There are three different propeller modes: flight when all of them face upwards; diving shifts them downards; swimming tilts / adjusts the angles as needed for propulsion. The drone can move underwater at a maximum speed of 6.6 ft (2.2 m) per second. If you want to see it in-action, head on over to the 2023 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (May 29 – June 2) at ExCel London.
