3D Projection Mapping faces

Japanese artist Nobumichi Asai has unveiled his second real-time 3D projection mapping project, or in other words, a way to project and map expressions onto people’s faces, effectively creating a facial mask. As you can see from the sample images above, it can project anything from animals to bizarre alien masks onto living human faces. Continue reading for a video demonstration and more information

Using computer technology, Asai was able to accurately map the model’s face down to the tiniest of details, and create a living 3-dimensional mask. His team drew inspiration from the use of masks in traditional Japanese culture. He’s now looking at ways of developing his projections so that they cover the whole body.
