Annual Pi Day celebrations are underway and NASA astronaut Stephen Bowen isn’t going to be left out. In this image snapped aboard the International Space Station, we can see him holding an actual pie that is festively decorated in commemoration of Pi Day.
Today, March 14th, marks the annual celebration of the mathematical constant pi, aka the Greek letter π. Its infinite number of digits is usually rounded to 3.14, hence the date of Pi, but did you know that Pi Day was first celebrated in 1988? That’s right, physicist Larry Shaw began celebrations at the Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco, but it didn’t really gain national recognition until two decades later.

For some people, the occasion marks an annual excuse to eat pizza or pie (or both), but to truly honor this wondrously useful number, a serving of mathematics is in order, too,” said Michelle Zajac, NASA Web Editor.
