NASA Tissue Chips Living Cells Space
NASA’s tissue chips aren’t designed for computers, but rather contain living cells that are used to accurately model organs in space. Technically speaking, they are small devices containing living cells that mimic complex functions of specific human tissues and organs, enabling researchers to run experiments on them.

A recent study had researchers placing engineered heart tissues on tissue chips sent to the ISS, helping astronauts study how microgravity impacts cardiac functions in space. What they discovered from the data was that heart tissues experienced impaired contractions, subcellular structural changes, and increased stress, which can lead to tissue damage and disease.

Researchers found that engineered muscle-on-a-chip platforms are viable for studying muscle-related bioprocesses in space. In addition, samples treated with drugs known to stimulate muscle regeneration showed partial prevention of the effects of microgravity,” said Andrea Lloyd, NASA Web Editor.
