Navy Indoor Ocean Naval Surface Warfare Center
When naval engineers aren’t working on an electric laser weapon system, some are busy at the Navy’s indoor ocean and its 216 cutting edge, electronically-controlled wave boards. Located at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., the hinged wave boards each come equipped with its own motor synced up to software that can precisely recreate eight ocean conditions across all seven seas.

This indoor ocean Navy is used to test models of billion-dollar ships before actually building them and also to assess whether sailors can launch missiles as well as land helicopters in specific conditions, including running on fumes. Most recently, the indoor ocean has been churned with JONSWAP, or a spectrum of specific frequencies and wavelengths derived from North Sea conditions. The main control center is located in a glass box located high above the spray and whether it be a typhoon or just ripples, a single button starts all of the action.
