Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) researchers introduce Nezha-SeaDart, an amphibious drone that can take off vertically on land and then dive underwater. This HAUV (hybrid aerial underwater vehicle) is all-electric and can transform into a fully submersible vehicle to complete tasks underwater, before surfacing and launching into the sky.
Nezha-SeaDart was recently put to a ten-day-long test in China’s Thousand Islands Lake of Zhejiang Province, proving that it is capable of seamlessly crossing between land, sea as well as air. This is partially due to its delta-wing configuration, which generates lift just like a standard fixed-wing aircraft.

An HAUV capable of autonomous and seamless water exit that does not rely on a dedicated propulsion system. A method of sizing the vehicle’s wing and thrust considering aerial cruises, underwater operations, and seamless water exits,” said the researchers.
