Xbox Game Studios revealed Ninja Gaiden 4 during the developer direct stream yesterday, and it’s slated for release on the PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox Series X | S in late 2025. This installment features an entirely new world set in a near-future Tokyo and primarily follows a new character named Yakumo, though series’ protagonist Ryu Hayabusa is also playable.
Tokyo city itself embraces a rainy cyberpunk-like aesthetic, as these unsettling conditions add to the game’ core themes and the key concept of “adversity”, according to Yuji Nakao, the game’s director. Players will see the rapid shifts between offense and defense in Ninja Gaiden 4, giving it an almost fighting game-like 1v1 combat feel.

If I were to go into detail about the feel of the action, we’d be here for quite a while (laughs). In all NINJA GAIDEN titles, a delicate balance is carefully crafted to maintain the satisfaction of attacking enemies without losing the speed and exhilaration that define the gameplay…when we brought Ryu Hayabusa into NINJA GAIDEN 4, we wanted long-time fans to experience the exact same enjoyable gameplay feel they’ve come to expect. We had numerous discussions with Team NINJA to fine-tune the mechanics and ensure everything felt just right,” said Yuji Nakao, NINJA GAIDEN 4’s producer and director from PlatinumGames.
