You’ve seen the Nintendo Switch Steam Deck, now check out modder Mackie Kannard-Smith’s Wii U controller mod. Called Wii U LOLWUT, this mod basically involves stuffing a trimmed Nintendo Wii U (WUP-50) motherboard into a Wii U GamePad while retaining its functionality, but adding the ability to load games directly on its screen.
YveltalGriffin’s trimmed WUP-50 motherboard measures 81 x 111mm and the board area was reduced by 70%, making it a perfect fit for the Wii U LOLWUT build. Nintendo originally released the Wii U console in 2012 and it became the company’s first console to support HD graphics. What also set the console apart from its predecessors is the ability for games to support the GamePad, Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Balance Board, Nintendo’s Classic Controller or the Wii U Pro Controller.

Next up was relocating the Pico de_Fuse modchip. The testpads it was connected to originally were going to be trimmed off, so I had to rewire the debug port pins (8 wires) to the same patch of vias as the eMMC, NAND, and WiFi. Virtually all of the vias in this area get used. Nice of Nintendo to consolidate all the IO interfaces, but a flex would really help here,” said YveltalGriffin.
