Remember the original Nokia ringtone? If so, Grand Vals by Spanish musician Francisco Tarrega might sound familiar. This musical piece was composed in 1902 by the classical guitarist and associated with Finnish corporation since the 1990s.
Grand Vals is officially the first identifiable musical ringtone on a mobile phone, and Nokia selected an excerpt to be used as its default ringtone. Written in the key of A major, it initially shipped as monophonic, but was eventually replaced with polyphonic and audio versions. This tune made its first appearance on the Nokia 2110, which was released in 1994, under the ringtone name ‘Type 7’. This means that it was just one of the standard ringtones.

For those who owned some of the later Nokia devices, you’ll know that the tune has been updated several times, with the first polyphonic MIDI version created by composer Ian Livingstone. This version could be found on the South Korea-exclusive Nokia 8877 and Nokia 8887, both of which were introduced in 2001. The Nokia 9500 Communicator in 2004 was the first device to use a real-tone recorded piano version, while the guitar-based version can be heard on Nokia’s 2008 N78.
