Laptop batteries are typically recycled, but one Australian couple found a new use for them. Syd and Camille Goodman used laptop batteries to power their home, located just outside of Canberra, as they wanted to do their part in protecting the environment after the unprecedented season of bush fires in 2020.
The project began after the couple ended up acquiring a whole lot of salvaged laptop batteries by the kilogram. These batteries were then all disassembled and tested before they tried figuring out just how much carbon emissions could be reduced. Syd and Camille Goodman also bought a 2019 Tesla Model 3 Performance off eBay to repurpose its hardware. That’s right, it’s all going into a Land Rover.

We started trying to figure out how much carbon could we emit, so we could have a budget. And the more we looked into it the more we realized there is no proper amount because we’re going to overshoot. We have to shoot for zero, as close to zero as possible,” said the couple.
