Scientists in China have developed a laser so powerful that it can be used to write in the air by using ultra-short pulses that strip electrons off air molecules and turn them into light. In other words, it essentially scars the air to create a floating ghostly-like image in mid-air. The team used it to create Chinese characters that could be viewed from any angle and even touch with their hands.
How does it work? Well, the system basically focuses high-intensity laser pulses in the air to create plasma, or ionized gas, which then emit energy in light form. A 3D scanner is then used to arrange the pixels and create characters in the air. Practical applications include high-precision manufacturing, medical instruments and quantum computing. Unfortunately (or fortunately), this isn’t quite yet powerful enough to achieve a laser-fusion record.
