This new Skyrim path-tracing mod by developer Pascal Glicher boasts the capability to store an extensive scene around the player, catering to nearly all use cases. The method is simliar to spatial hashing and loosely based on voxels, but without the high memory consumption, which means that it can efficiently handles the entire city of Whiterun at once.
Since this method is dynamic, stale data is automatically removed upon cell change. It’s not yet able to handle dynamic light sources and achieve diffuse indirect global illumination only, but the developer states that this is only a matter of time and will require more game-specific work. This was all made possible with the ReShade addon API capable of interacting seamlessly with the CPU-to-GPU data stream during rendering, just like NVIDIA’s RTX Remix.
