Solar-Powered Tiny Home Lava Flow
There’s the Vattenfall wind turbine house, and then this solar-powered tiny home that was built on top of lava flow in Hawaii. Jade has lived on lava in Hawaii for over 15 years with her young son in the Phoenix Tiny House, an off-grid vacation home that she also rents out.

She contracted Artistree Home to build the structure you see here on top of lava flow that has existed since the 1990s. Fortunately, if lava does ever threaten Phoenix, they can just put it on tracks and drive the home out of harms way. All of the exterior wood was first burnt using the Japanese technique called ‘Shou Sugi Ban’, which not only preserves the material, but also creates a distinctive aesthetic appearance.

I live just up the road from here and in 2018 we lost 700 houses to the lava. I love it here. Yes Hawaii is very expensive. Even bare lava rock on the slopes of a volcano are outrageous. You have to be resilient. Haul your own water, groceries are an hour or more away and there’s no guarantee that the lava won’t take it away again,” said one commenter.
