President Donald Trump’s officially unveiled the US military’s Space Force logo today, and social media was quick to point out that it looked eerily similar to an emblem from a famous science-fiction franchise, Star Trek. However, it’s been in use for quite some time, starting with the US Army Air Forces. Space Force is now the sixth branch of the military, joining the Air Force, Marine Corps, Army, Navy, and Coast Guard. Read more for a video and additional information.



The president says that space is the “world’s newest war-fighting domain and amid grave threats to our national security, American superiority in space is absolutely vital. We’re leading, but we’re not leading by enough, and very shortly, we’ll be leading by a lot.”

[It] was first used as early as 1942 by the US Army Air Forces. Since then, the delta symbol has been a prominent feature in military space community emblems…the US Space Force seal honors the Department of the Air Force’s proud history and long-standing record of providing the best space capabilities in the world,” said Space Force Maj. William Russell.
